Wolfgang Schäfer

After studying graphic design, with the main focus on illustration and photography, Wolfgang Schäfer started centring on painting in the early 80s. After countless successful expositions, accompanied by an extreme artistic evolution situated between performance and fine arts, a great passion became apparent – the one for the opera diva Maria Callas.

He reinterprets this passion time and time again, as an outstanding part of his oeuvres. That way, the Callas portraits have always followed his respective style and personal expression. The series started in 1991 with paintings such as “Nostalgic faces”, followed by a very expressive painting technique in the 90s, and is now, and also in 2007, represented by very colour-intensive pop art paintings.
